Refurbished Russian Ballistic Missile Sub Returns to Service

Aug. 13, 2012

The refurbished Russian ballistic missile submarine Novomoskovsk is again operating with the Northern Fleet and will continue to do so for another decade, RIA Novosti reported on Monday (see GSN, March 17, 2004).

"The boat's life after refit and modernization will be extended by another 10 years," fleet spokesman Capt. Vadim Serga said.

The overhaul of the Project 667-line vessel involved hundreds of enhancements, "making the boat quieter, increasing its ability to detect other submarines, increasing its survivability and nuclear safety," the spokesman said.

The Northern Fleet in 2011 received back another refurbished 667-type ballistic missile submarine, the Verkhoturye.

The Novomoskovsk in 1998 was famously used to place a space research satellite into orbit via a ballistic missile (RIA Novosti, Aug. 13).
