“This change raises questions about the reasons behind this surprising involvement of what is basically a private internet company in international politics — and on the controversial side,” Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told AFP. The change went into effect from May 1, Google spokesperson Nathan Tyler said in a statement. “We’re changing the name ‘Palestinian Territories’ to ‘Palestine’ across our products. We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries. In this case, we are following the lead of the UN ... and other international organisations,” Tyler said. Didn't any of Google execs. ever hear about the basic rule of never mixing business with politics and religion?

A prominent Saudi Islamic scholar has slammed a local satellite TV children channel for showing a cartoon film involving a pig as its main character. Sheikh Mohammed Al Areefi described the programme telecast by Ajial (generations) channel as trivial and without any educational objective. “The cartoon film shown on that channel is trivial and has no educational or cultural benefit as it involved a pig as its star,” Al Areefi said on his Twitter page. “I wonder who is the manager of this TV channel that shows such bad programmes…is his name is Daniel, George or what,” he added, according to Saudi newspapers. A congregation of Bosnian Muslims that fought St. Louis County leaders over zoning issues six years ago is again battling county officials who have revoked the group’s tax-exempt status. The Islamic Community Center filed a lawsuit earlier this month challenging that decision, saying that while the recession had slowed its plans for a 4.7-acre parcel in south St. Louis County, it has maintained the property and has always intended to develop it into a religious and community center. St. Louis County’s Board of Equalization argued that by letting the land sit vacant for years without pursuing its religious mission there, the Bosnian group had ceded its First Amendment right to exempt the property from taxation. “No evidence was presented to establish any actual or regular use of the property for any religious educational or charitable purposes,” a board report said. “The property is vacant and unused real estate.” In 2010, the county withdrew the Islamic Community Center’s tax exemption. The group appealed to the Missouri State Tax Commission, which sided with the county last month. The Netherlands recently raised its alert level for terrorist attacks from “limited” to the second highest level, “substantial”, as a result of increasing links between Islamic militants here and in Syria – and the domestic intelligence service, AIVD, has increased its surveillance of suspect networks. The National Counterterrorism Co-ordinator revealed that as many as 100 young men had recently travelled to Africa and the Middle East, particularly Syria, and said: “These jihadist travellers can return highly radicalised, traumatised, and with a strong desire to commit violence, thus posing a significant threat to this country.” The proposal to allow the tapping of Skype and other VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocols) services is contained in draft legislation which will look at computer-related crime in general, following a string of DDos (distributed denial-of-service) attacks last month which left key banking services paralysed. Britain will be the most ethnically mixed country in the western world in less than 40 years, experts predicted. They claimed that the share of the population from an ethnic minority or migrant background will hit 38 per cent — overtaking other nations in around 2050. And the study said Britain will become the most mixed country in Europe in around five years when the minority and migrant proportion of the population overtakes the same group in the Netherlands. The analysis, prepared by Professor David Coleman of Oxford University for the Migration Observatory think-tank, is a fresh indicator of the impact of large-scale migration on life in Britain. Professor Coleman, an expert in demography — the study of how populations change, endorsed a projection he made two years ago suggesting that at current migration rates white British people will be a minority in the population by about 2066, in just over 50 years. In his new paper, he said these projections may prove to be too high if the Coalition keeps its pledge to reduce net migration — the difference between those arriving in the country and those people leaving. “The highest migration projections for the UK put the crossover for the whole country, when the combined population of all ethnic minority groups together would exceed the population of white British, at around 2070, although it would have occurred in younger age groups and major urban areas rather earlier than that,” Professor Coleman said. “But 57 years is a long time. That is looking far into the future and only illustrates the consequences of things remaining as they were in 2010. It assumes, for example, no enduring effect of the current Coalition Government’s attempts to reduce net immigration.” The projections of which countries are likely to have the most ethnically mixed populations says that Britain will become more mixed than the United States shortly after 2050.

The attorney for Ed Dahlberg, the Clifton resident who was charged with assaulting a cab driver on Friday, released a statement Wednesday denying that his client punched the driver and fractured his jaw. "Mr. Dahlberg’s comments to Mr. Salim were regretful, and he apologizes to anyone who found them offensive. Anyone who listens to the entire conversation and views the entire tape will hear that most of the conversation had a friendly tone. "Unfortunately, it got emotional as the discussion turned to Jihad and 9/11, and especially heated on the subject of jihadists who want to harm America. "Mr. Dahlberg regrets becoming emotional. Like many Americans, 9/11 had a profound impact on Mr. Dahlberg. He certainly didn’t mean to cause offense to Mr. Salim or the Islamic community. Mr. Dahlberg asserts there was no subsequent interaction between the two beyond what was captured on the tape. Further, Mr. Dahlberg did not assault Mr. Salim at any time, nor did he get violent in any way."

A mortuary familiar with Muslim services will handle funeral arrangements for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died in a gunbattle with police after an intense manhunt, a funeral director said Friday. Peter Stefan, owner of Graham Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors in Worcester confirmed his facility will handle Tsarnaev’s arrangements but he could not confirm whether he has possession of the body. Stefan said everybody deserves a dignified burial service no matter the circumstances of their death and he is prepared for protests. He added that arrangements have yet to be worked out. Several protesters showed up outside a North Attleborough funeral home Thursday night there Tsarnaev’s body was taken following its release by the state medical examiner.

Deputy Chairperson of Egypt's Nour Party Sayed Mustafa stated that Muslims should not congratulate Copts during their holiday since they are of two different faiths."We are not forced to congratulate Copts on their religious holidays, because we disagree with their faith and Copts celebrate the Easter according to their beliefs," Mustafa said in a statement. "Copts are likewise not supposed to congratulate us on our Islamic holidays, as our religion obliges us that there is no compulsion in religion … the Nour Party is a political party with an Islamic reference so we do not, as policy, discuss the prohibition of such congratulations," he said. Dr. Abdel Rahman el-Bar, mufti of the Muslim Brotherhood, issued a fatwa on Sunday to not congratulate the Copts on Easter, as it violates Islamic law. Fliers were distributed in the governorate of Beni Suef, outside of Cairo, which read "Sham el-Nessim is Not Our Holiday," and included a fatwa prohibiting citizens from celebrating the holiday. Police stormed Abdullah Badr's apartment early in the morning in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya and took him into custody so he could start serving the sentence, the official said. A court had convicted the fiery preacher and television show host for insulting actress Elham Shahin, who had sued him. It also fined him 20,000 pounds ($2,900/2,197 euros). According to press reports, he had accused her of promiscuity The television station that hosted Badr's show, Al-Hafez, airs religious programming and talk shows, and is one of a crop of Islamic broadcasters that have been accused of airing extremist thought. Abu Islam Ahmed Abdullah, an owner of another Islamic television station, is facing trial for tearing apart a bible during an anti-American protest in Cairo.
