A VCDL member has been arrested and is being prosecuted falsely for brandishing a firearm - this time in Henrico County.

The allegation is that he was observed by a school bus driver as he moved his handgun from the glove compartment to a console, and that caused the school bus driver to become afraid.  (A mental condition called "hoplophobia" - a morbid and irrational fear of weapons.)

The VCDL member was not aware that there was any kind of a problem until 48 hours later when he was arrested in front of his family!  Worse, he was held in jail for almost 13 hours because the Magistrate did not want to take responsibility for allowing him to be free until trial.

Oh, it gets worse.  Because he was in jail waiting to see the judge (who released him on personal recognizance at the initial hearing later that afternoon) he was terminated from a new job he had yet to even start.  :-(

Many VCDL members are appalled and outraged at the bizarre circumstances surrounding his being charged and arrested.  A defense Fund for his benefit has been set up.  (The defense fund has been set up and is being maintained by criminal defense attorney Dan Hawes.)

2.  Senators Warner and Kaine vote anti-gun again!

Both Senators Warner and Kaine disgracefully voted anti-gun on a measure that would have expanded our right to self-defense on Army Corps of Engineers land.  The measure got a majority of 54 votes, but needed 60 to pass.

Senate rejects firearms on more federal lands

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate has rejected an effort to expand the use of firearms on the heavily visited lands of the Army Corps of Engineers in a congressional victory for gun control supporters.

The vote for the proposal by Sen. Tom Coburn was 56-43 for the legislation, but that fell short of the 60 votes needed.

The measure would have let people carry guns onto Corps property for any legal purpose. They currently can only be used there for activities like hunting or target shooting.

We need to contact both of our Senators and let them know that we don't appreciate their bad votes on Senate Amendment 805 to Senate Amendment 799 to S. 601!  They need to be reminded that we are watching their votes on gun-related bills and expect them to honor the Constitution and our God-given rights.

Here are their phone numbers:

Sen. Tim Kaine: 202-224-4024

Sen. Mark Warner: 202-224-2023
