Protests in Lebanon, Yemen, Afghanistan, Sudan, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt – Notice Anything?

WWIII. It’s a term people throw around loosely nowadays in this world in which many Americans take for granted. September 11, 2001 now seems to be a distant memory for many. With several buildings down, thousands killed, and America in fear of what could happen next, the majority of Americans seemed content having a stronger presence abroad. But now, that sentiment has changed dramatically, and it appears as if the loosely thrown around WWIII is not really all that far off.
According to Reuters, “one demonstrator was killed and two others were wounded in clashes with security forces in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday in protests over a film insulting the Muslim Prophet Mohammad and against the pope’s visit to Lebanon.” A U.S. fast food restaurant, KFC, was burned as anti-American slogans were shouted, and the crowds chanted against the pope’s visit to Lebanon.
This is not the only event to occur:
- CNN reports the “Yemeni police opened fire Friday to stop protesters from reaching the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa.”
- Anti-American protests occurred in Afghanistan over the film as a U.S. flag was burned during “Death to America” chants occurred.
- Thousands of protestors took to the German and U.K. Embassies in Khartoum, Sudan, pulling down the German flag and setting the embassy on fire.
- Police fired tear gas in an attempt to stop protesters from climbing the gates of the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia as the protesters throw rocks and wave black flags.
- Cairo protestors stormed the U.S. Embassy just days ago on the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
- The U.S. Ambassador to Libya was murdered on the same day.
What are we to make of this, and what is the answer? Who knows? But take a look at this map. Do you see a fluent relationship between the countries that are holding anti-American protests?
One thing is for sure – the events taking place (over a piss-poor YouTube movie that no rational American had a part in) right now are not good for anyone in this world. Is war the answer? I hope not. But whatever is going on now with foreign affairs is not working, so maybe it’s time to try something different.
Your move, President Obama – and don’t think for one second that a Presidential campaign could ever be more important than our national security.
