Number of U.S. Assault Weapons Increased While U.S. Murder Rate Decreased

Posted by: Marc Schenker Posted date: January 13, 2013

The number of assault weapons in the U.S. has been aggressively rising over the last two decades or so, according to statistics from various sources. Curiously—but not surprisingly if you are well-informed (this excludes you, liberals)—the U.S. murder rate has been going in the other direction, steadily decreasing over the same period of time. This indirect relationship likely has unintelligent liberals scratching their heads and uttering, “Huh? But…but…but…I thought…drool…drool…that more assault weapons equal more murrders [sic]!!!” After all, they dumbly believe that more guns equal more killing, but conservatives are smarter than this (and the facts back them up).

Bang! Bang! Bang!: Yahoo News

First, let’s look at the U.S. murder rate before we go into the assault weapons statistics. The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports reveal that the American murder rate, back in 1991, was about 9.8 per every 100,000 people. By 2011, that murder rate had dramatically dropped to 4.7 per every 100,000 people. This works out to a drop of more than 50 percent in the murder rate. In that same timespan, violent crime also plummeted by almost 50 percent! That sounds great, doesn’t it?

Let’s now look at the number of assault weapons in the U.S. over approximately that same span of time. A study cited by Salon claimed that the number of assault weapons in the U.S. in 1994 was about 1.5 million, but, as you may well know, not everyone defines assault weapons in the same way, so that figure is somewhat unreliable. Still, it’s a starting point. In that same Salon piece from December 2012, the conclusion was—again, this is highly approximate, only—that there are about 4 million or so AR-15 assault rifles in the U.S by 2011. Since that was only one type of assault weapon cited, there are clearly way more assault weapons in the U.S. overall.

The conclusion is this, though: In spite of the aggressively rising number of assault weapons in the U.S. over a period of nearly two decades, the U.S. murder rate has fallen sharply by more than 50 percent of what it was in 1991! This is stunning news because it proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that guns and assault weapons don’t increase the murder rate. This has damning implications for the irrational liberals who insanely insist on a new assault weapons ban. However, the facts and the evidence are not on the side of liberals (are they ever?!), which means that Dianne Feinstein’s new assault weapons ban bill and Barack Obama’s intention to tighten gun control must be stopped, whatever it takes.

If a new assault weapons ban is passed, it’ll just stop you from being able to protect yourself, while not helping to stop murders. Contact that deranged Democrat Feinstein at (202) 224-3841 to get in touch with her Washington, D.C. office. Contact Barack Obama at (202) 456-1111, which is the White House number. Tell both of these liberals that they should not mess with your 2nd Amendment rights!
