Egypt security searching for up to 500 Palestinian agents from Gaza

CAIRO — Egypt has determined that Palestinian fighters from the Gaza Strip were being recruited for insurgency operations believed sponsored by Iran.

Security sources said Palestinian fighters linked to Salafist militias in the Gaza Strip were recruited to join a Hizbullah-aligned cell in Cairo. They said authorities were searching for at least three Palestinians linked to the alleged plot.

"The Palestinians left the Gaza Strip in mid-February and are believed to be hiding in Cairo," a source said.

The sources said the Palestinian suspects left the Gaza Strip for Egypt's Sinai Peninsula through the smuggling tunnel network between Feb. 14 and Feb. 24. They said the alleged insurgents entered Sinai along with some 500 Palestinians, many of them believed to be agents of the Hamas regime.

The Egyptian daily Al Masri Al Yom said the Interior Ministry has directed the search for the 500 Palestinians. The newspaper said many of the Palestinians, including the three alleged operatives, have already arrived in Cairo, particularly the district of Azbakeya.

"Police found four weapons in the apartments and two Palestinian passports, one of which allegedly belonged to an individual who had previously been arrested for ties to a Lebanese terrorist cell," Al Masri said on Feb. 28.

This marked the first Iranian-linked insurgency cell in Egypt since the visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in February 2013. The sources said Ahmadinejad was pressed by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to end all Iranian activities to destabilize the Arab country.
