Iran in talks with Russians for 2nd reactor at the Bushehr site

MOSCOW — Iran has been preparing for the assembly of another nuclear reactor at Bushehr.

Officials said Teheran has approached Russia to help build a second power unit at the nuclear energy facility at Bushehr. They said Teheran was discussing the issue with the Kremlin as well as Russia's state-owned Atomstroyexport.

"We hope to start building the second unit with our Russian colleagues," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said.

At a news conference in Moscow on Feb. 12, Salehi said Russia was deemed the preferred contractor for the second unit at Bushehr. The foreign minister, a former nuclear chief, cited a 1992 agreement with Russia to build nuclear power plants for a total capacity of up to 5,000 megawatts.

Officials said Russia has been training Iran to operate and maintain Bushehr, a 1,000 megawatt facility that went online in August 2012. They said the Teheran regime was satisfied with the completion of the first reactor unit at Bushehr.

Saleh's statements confirmed previous Russian assertions of negotiations for a second unit at Bushehr, monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency. In mid-2012, Sergei Kiriyenko, director of Russia's state-owned Rosatom, said Moscow and Teheran were discussing a joint project for the construction of a second reactor.
