President Obama’s administration is discussing different ways to step up support for rebels who are demanding more U.S. involvement in the two-year conflict that has killed more than 70,000 people. Britain and France are pushing to lift a European Union arms embargo on Syria and already supply rebels with military-style equipment such as anti-tank and anti- aircraft weapons. “I’m not sure what the schedule is, but I do believe that it’s important for us to try to continue to put the pressure on President Assad and to try to change his calculation,” Kerry said Tuesday before leaving Israel for the trip to London. “Those efforts have been very much front and center in our discussions in the last week in Washington.”

The lecture will be held in the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art as part of the museum association’s Islam Awareness Month. “Jihad means to struggle or strive in a way or sake of God,” said Anosha Syeda, vice president of the Muslim Student Association. “Many times this word is given a negative connotation either by the media or government indicating that the religion of Islam encourages war, but in fact Islam promotes peace.” Jihad is used in the Quran to talk about going to war with people who are fighting you, and at other times to talk about striving to be a better Muslim by fighting your own inner self, ego, or desires, Syeda said. “It is important for everyone to understand the true meaning to prevent stereotypes about Islam, so they can allow themselves to have a better understanding of Islam and Muslims in general,” Syeda said.
