Boston Bombers and Shariat Jamaat

Hardly important which MUSLIM terrorist group the bombers belong to...inordinate amount of hand-wringing and time being wasted on membership and motivation issues.  Motivation is islam and as far as membership: They are all muslims and act with same goals and methods.

If the Boston bombers were affiliated with any terrorist group, it could be one that is relatively unique and one very few Americans know anything

about- Shariat Jamaat. It is difficult to determine any specific terror affiliation connected with the Tsarnaeva brothers at this time. What is known about the two brothers can lead to pinpointing international connections, if such connections did in fact exist.

The Boston bombers were originally from Dagestan, Russia and followed the religion of Islam. While many reports claimed they were from Chechnya, we now know this to be untrue. Chechnya rests to the west-north west of Dagestan and the Terek River runs through both locations.

Why reports initially stated they were from Chechnya remains unclear. Maybe such reporting was sparked due to geographical ignorance. Maybe the reports were sparked due to knowledge of Chechnya's Islamic radical terror crisis and the links Al Qaeda has with Chechen fighters. That doesn't matter, but what does matter is getting the two bomber's place of origin correct-Dagestan.

Dagestan is unique for multiple reasons. There is no dominant ethnic base in Dagestan. However, there is a rise in the Islamic Salafi ideology (the very ideology behind Al Qaeda) and Islamic extremism. One terrorist group dominates in Dagestan, and if either or both brothers were affiliated with an Islamic terror group, it could be that of Shariat Jamaat (Dagestani Shariat Jamaat).

Shariat Jamaat is a decentralized organization similar to Al Qaeda. Its operatives work within small cells who often conduct operations independently without any higher command ever knowing of their activities.

The group is known for their abilities to conduct assassinations with high levels of effectiveness. The group, who once refused to target civilians, does so today but concentrates efforts on security forces in the region.

Even though Shariat Jamaat operates predominantly in Dagestan and throughout the Caucus, it is a terrorist organization that operates internationally. In 2011, German authorities arrested a man linked to Shariat Jamaat. That same year, Czech security forces apprehended eight terrorists affiliated with the group - charges included falsified documents (including fraudulent passports), and possession of illegal weapons and explosives.

While the United States and our allies do not consider Shariat Jamaat a foreign terrorist organization (FTO), it is clear per recent German and Czech apprehensions they in fact are such a terrorist organization. The US State Department has failed in placing them on their Terrorism Exclusion List (TEL). Then again, the Taliban is also not on such a list either.

With thousands of civilians present during the Boston Marathon, and an incredibly large police presence, the target location of the double bombing was ideal for the terrorists. The actions taken by the Tsarnaeva brothers after the initial double bombing was unique, yet incredibly sloppy. It is apparent that they were not the most highly trained terrorists in the world, yet they still successfully terrorized many.

A relatively decent argument could be made that they followed the modus operandi of Shariat Jamaat. This does not mean they were necessarily a part of Shariat Jamaat, however, if they were connected to any international terrorist group, that would likely be the one. It's just another group investigators need to place on their radar.
