(CNSNews.com) - Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the ethnic Chechen Russian immigrant who conspired with his brother to bomb the Boston Marathon, was naturalized as a U.S. citizen on Sept. 11, 2012, but flunked "Intro to American Politics"--along with six other classes--at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, according to the New York Times.

Despite flunking seven classes, Tsarnaev was reportedly in his sophomore year at the taxpayer-funded university when he and his brother plotted to murder masses of innocent people at the Boston Marathon.

"According to a university transcript reviewed by The New York Times, he was failing many of his classes," the Times reported in a story posted on Friday. "The transcript shows him receiving seven failing grades over three semesters, including F's in Principles of Modern Chemistry, Intro to American Politics and Chemistry and the Environment."

The Boston Globe said on Saturday that both Dzhokhar and his brother were hard workers and had a "keen" intelligence. Dzhokhar, the paper said, was in his sophomore year at the university studying marine biology.

"The two young men, seven years apart, shared a keen intelligence and willingness to work hard, according to interviews with dozens of people who knew them," the Globe reported.

The "younger brother, a well-liked wrestling team captain and National Honor Society member in high school, is currently enrolled as a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, living in a dorm on campus and studying to be a marine biologist," the Globe said.

Even with his alleged keen intelligence and willingness to work hard, naturlized-citizen terrorist Dhokhar Tsarnaev was failing classes at the University of Massachusetts at a rate (7 classes in 3 semesters equals 2.33 failed classes per semester) that would have resulted in his failing almost 19 classes over a full 8-semester college career.
