Saudi women have been allowed to ride buggies and bikes in public after the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice lifted a ban on them. Under the new rules, women can use parks, esplanades and open desert areas and enjoy themselves as long as they are modestly dressed, sources from the Commission told local Arabic daily Al Youm. A male relative should be present to ensure he can provide prompt assistance in case of falls or accidents, the source said. Women wishing to ride the buggies or bikes should avoid places where there are assemblies of young people to protect themselves from physical or verbal harassment and possible theft, he said.

Aisha Qaddafi, daughter of the slain Libyan dictator, has set fire to a presidential residence in southern Algeria, where she has taken refuge since August 2011, Ennahar newspaper reported Monday. She had occasionally damaged furniture and parts of the residence when she was angry, but this latest incident, which occurred three days ago, was the most serious, the Algerian newspaper reported. Qaddafi had previously destroyed the shelves of a library in the residence, and damaged pictures of Algerian President Abdul Aziz Bouteflika, Ennahar added. AFGHAN TEEN KILLS AMERICAN SOLDIER PLAYING WITH CHILDREN PENTAGON TRIES TO LIE ABOUT CAUSE OF DEATH Posted: 01 Apr 2013 10:55 AM PDT
An Afghan teenager has killed an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan by stabbing him in the neck, senior US military officials have confirmed.
The soldier was playing with a group of children outside when the assailant stabbed him from behind. One of the officials estimated the attacker was around 16-years-old, but he escaped over the border to Pakistan so his age could not be verified. The official said the youth was not believed to be from the Afghan security forces so the killing is not being classified as an insider attack. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the young man was acting independently when he killed the soldier, but had since joined the Islamic militant movement. The Pentagon said in a statement last week that Sgt Cable died from injuries sustained when his unit was attacked by enemy forces.

New rules from the education inistry of the Islamist Hamas movement ruling the Gaza Strip will bar men from teaching at girls' schools and mandate separate classes for boys and girls from the age of nine. The law, published on Monday, would go into effect in the next school year and apply throughout the coastal enclave, including in private, Christian-led and United Nations schools. Critics of the new measures say the Islamist movement is trying to force its ideology on society, but proponents say they merely want to codify conservative Palestinian values into law. READ MORE

Iran blamed steamy Turkish dramas for rising divorce rates in the country, saying that the TV shows have eroded the taboos surrounding divorce and have “destabilized the institution of family.” According to The Sunday Times, Iran has the fourth-highest divorce rate in the world. In 2013 alone, the British newspaper said, Tehran saw a rise of 6% in couples who decided to call it quits. Egyptian female students are now faced with threats of “going to Hell” if they continue to wear pants at an Alexandria university, north of Cairo, the New Women Foundation reported, citing a news article published by al-Youm al-Saba’a online website. Female students were surprised to see threatening literature calling on them to abandon the “manly” look and go back to a more “Islamic way of dress.” Although the majority of Egyptian women wear the head scarf, ultra-conservatives still complain about women’s attire and try, at every available chance, to limit women’s freedom in the country. “Know women that it is either the hijab or Hell. Ermia was declared the grand winner of the Iranian version of X-Factor, Googosh Academy, which is being filmed and transmitted to Iranian viewers from London by an exiled TV channel. Taking home a staggering amount of $25,000 during the announcement of winners last Friday, Ermia is now the topic of discussions and forums online – but this is not about money. Iranians are worried about two major things – the voting system that helped the judges decide and Ermia breaking the Shariah law by singing, especially while wearing the hijab headscarf. Iranian conservatives are fuming over the fact that the married winner challenging the Islamic restrictions on married women performing and singing in public. During her final performance, Ermia was shown dressed in a way that covered her whole body – from head to toe – but is still accused for tarnishing Islam’s culture, the Guardian reported. According to the Iranian 1983 Penal law, bad hijabi is punishable by 74 lashes. Punishment was then reduced to either imprisonment or paying a certain amount of fine in 1996.
