Hamas claims capture of spies in Gaza from NATO countries

GAZA CITY — The Hamas regime has reported the capture of Arab and Western spies in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas said intelligence and security agencies have detained an unspecified number of agents for Arab and NATO states. They said many of the detainees have admitted to working for the foreign intelligence agencies.

"The Gaza Strip is swarming with Western intelligence agencies, such as the American, British, French and German services," Hamas Interior Ministry official Mohammed Lafi said. "They all target Gaza and Hamas."

In a statement on April 6, Lafi, head of the Internal Security Agency, said the suspected spies were targeting the Hamas regime. He said at least 50 percent of the detainees have already confessed to the charges against them.

The Islamist regime has granted a one-month ultimatum for purported spies to surrender in exchange for leniency. The reprieve was scheduled to expire on April 12.

The Interior Ministry has warned Gazan residents not to provide information to foreign journalists and institutions. The ministry said Palestinians have been suspected of collaborating with Israel.

"This is a chance for all those who fell victims to the deception of Israeli security forces to return to their people," the ministry said.

The statement was issued amid reports that Hamas detained Palestinian rocket gunners linked to Al Qaida. The Mujahedeen Shura Council urged Hamas to release the detainees.
