U.S. Army consults zombie expert on disaster survival

Zombies aren't real, but earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, pandemics and other natural disasters that disrupt a nation's infrastructure are real.

With the rationale that preparing for one also prepares for the other, the U.S. Army invited author and zombie "expert" Max Brooks to speak at a conference on hurricane preparation last week at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, according to an article on the Army's website.

Brooks, the author of "The Zombie Survival Guide" and "World War Z," says in the article that his zombie survival kit and earthquake survival kit are the same thing, and that he's excited to see his work increase awareness for disaster preparedness.

Zombies have become increasingly popular in culture during recent years and the Army is one of several public organizations to use their popularity to its advantage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has an entire zombie section on its website where it draws parallels between zombie movies and TV shows, and managing and preparing for disease outbreaks.

This isn't Brooks' first time consulting with the armed forces, as the Army reports he has twice spoken at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., on the same topic. In the video below from one of those talks, Brooks discusses how his fictional zombies relate to the real world.
