On Thursday of this week, AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via a text message to their mobile devices that the U.S. is now becoming involved in the Syrian civil war due to a finding from the Obama administration that Syrian government has used chemical weapons resulting in the deaths of approximately 150.
According to Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communication Ben Rhodes, the President has made the decision to provide direct military support to the rebels. This support is likely to include an attempt at establishing a no fly zone in the skies over Syria with the effort being staged from air bases in Jordan.
President Obama has repeatedly said that the use of chemical weapons is a "red line" that, if crossed, would be a "game changer" for more U.S. involvement in the Syrian civil war. To date, the U.S. policy on Syria has primarily focused on offering the rebels non-lethal assistance and humanitarian aid.
As reported by AlertsUSA Threat Journal on multiple occasions over the past six months (see this, this, this and this), there has been an enormous buildup of military assets from dozens of countries in the region around Syria, and not all of it against the regime of Syrian President Bashir Assad.
Listeners are reminded that there are currently more than 15,000 personnel from 18 different countries, including the U.S., currently in Jordan holding training exercises for possible action in Syria. As we have also recently reported, Russia has more than a dozen warships in the Eastern Mediterranean and within the last few months has directly threatened Western nations about getting involved in the Syrian conflict. Even China has ships of war in the region.
Both Russia and China, which are major economic and trading partners with Syria, have vowed to protect the country from western interference (also see this and this). Even Iran has vowed to become involved militarily if Western nations attempt to interfere.
At a minimum, Syria now threatens to become a larger proxy war. Iran, Hezbollah and Russia are allied with Assad, while the U.S., U.K., France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey and other predominately Sunni nations are backing the rebels (who have pledged their loyalty to al Qaeda).
This is a very dangerous situation taking shape and one that can very easily extend to U.S. shores given the repeated threats made by terrorist groups such as Hezbollah and al Qaeda to strike the U.S. homeland if Western forces become involved in Syria.
AlertsUSA Threat journal will continue to monitor the situation and will provide additional details and updates as events warrant.
