New Virginia-class sub Minnesota delivered to Navy

NEWPORT NEWS

The newest Virginia-class submarine built at Newport News Shipbuilding has been delivered to the Navy.

Huntington Ingalls Industries says the fast-attack submarine Minnesota is being delivered on budget and nearly 11 months ahead of schedule.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has scheduled Minnesota's commissioning for Sept. 7.

The 377-foot-long sub is capable of underwater speeds of more than 25 knots and can stay submerged for up to three months at a time. It is also built for increased firepower, maneuverability and stealth.

Last month the submarine was submerged for the first time and operated at high speeds on the surface and under water.

Construction of the Minnesota began in February 2008.
